In 2010 it changed its name from Alwil to AVAST Software. In 1995 AVAST became the first Windows 95 antivirus program and in 1996 it became one of the first three antivirus programs globally to win VB100 awards in all categories. They later realised, coincidentally, that AVAST meant “stop!” in nautical terms which was very appropriate since they hoped AVAST would become a leader in antivirus software and stop computer viruses in their tracks! In 1988 they developed a programme they called “anti-virus advanced set” (AVAST) which was to remove the Vienna Virus from computers. Based in Prague, Czech Republic it was started by Eduard Kucera and Pavel Baudiš, two computer-technology innovators.
